Get to Know the New LitCamp

Summer instruction must be rigorous enough to accelerate learning. But it also needs to keep students engaged and coming back for more. The new and improved LitCamp does both!

Elevate Summer Instruction

Every day, LitCampers practice foundational skills, reading fluency, and writing to ensure they have the skills, knowledge, and confidence to enter next year with success.

Promote Well-Being

Every day, LitCampers approach learning with one of the Seven Strengths: learning with a sense of friendship, belonging, kindness, curiosity, confidence, courage, and hope.

Keep Kids Coming Back for More

You want a summer program that students and families can't wait to participate in. LitCamp helps you balance engagement with evidence-based instruction.

How it Works

Every summer program is different. That's why LitCamp is so flexible. The Leader's Guide provides detailed instructions for multiple recommended implementations. This is just one.

Recommended Implementation:

  • 5–6 weeks
  • 120 minutes
  • 4 days a week

Use Intentional Read-Alouds

Gather around the "campfire" for an engaging read-aloud with a high-quality Scholastic title.

Close Read the Text

Students return to the read-aloud book and "go deep" for a teacher-led discussion that builds comprehension, knowledge acquisition, and listening and speaking skills.

Teach Foundational Skills

Campers receive explicit whole-group instruction and then apply those skills during activities and games.

Practice Fluency

Build fluency and stamina with modeled reading, partner/group work, and reader's theater.

Build Knowledge

Campers independently read topic texts sets that build knowledge on topic of the day. Text sets features developmentally appropriate books, decodables, or short reads.

Improve Writing

The teacher models a daily writing activity and students practice in their notebooks.

Meet Your Camp Director

Pam Allyn is also the founding director of LitWorld, a game-changing initiative impacting millions of children and young adults, that includes LitCamp and World Read Aloud Day.
